The Right Ways to Deal with Marine Coatings

In life, there are right ways and wrong ways to deal with problems. For example:

We all have choices when it comes to handling different situations. When it comes to marine coatings, there are right and wrong ways of dealing with the application process. First and foremost, you need to choose the right time and place to apply your marine coatings. Choosing the right application location means avoiding rain, high wind, bugs, traffic, leaves, dust, etc. Oftentimes, a work shed or garage is the best way to avoid such problems.

Indoor Application

If you are applying marine coatings in a work shed or a temperature controlled garage, you can apply marine coatings any time of day – just keep the temperature steady – (think anywhere between 68 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit)

Outdoor Application

If you’re applying marine coatings outside, do so in the morning after the dew has evaporated, or wait until the mid-afternoon. These are the times when the sun is at it’s weakest. Keep in mind that applying marine coatings during evening hours can cause drying and moisture issues due to the varying temperatures. Think of Little Red Riding Hood. Noon is too hot. Evening is too cold. But late morning to mid-afternoon is just right.

Don’t cut corners while applying marine coatings.

As Confucius says, “Success depends upon previous preparation, and without such preparation there is sure to be failure.” If you slack off during the prep stage, the finished look is going to suffer. So, no cutting corners.

Make sure to sand the application area and use the proper tools. A random-orbital sander equipped with vacuum attachments works wonders for large areas. For smaller areas, try a palm sander. A trim sander with a triangular mount will get in close around mounted hardware.

When you’re ready to apply marine coatings, make sure to work one section or the application surface at a time. Trying to apply one large area in record time could result in an uneven look. Take your time, and if necessary, use movable references to create smaller sections to work on.
